August Free Books!

I hope your summer has been filled with sunshine and maybe a few great beach reads (and time to read them!).  To qualify for this month’s drawing, please let us know what book you read during your vacation time (or would’ve read if you had vacation time!).  Summers are always a hectic but fun time for us.  We usually have lots of company, and most of our friends and family are readers.  I’ve had time to sneak in a few books this summer.  One of my favorites was Mitch Albom’s newest, HAVE A LITTLE FAITH.   And here’s my haven’t-yet-had-time-to-read book: My sister-in-law who was visiting from Colorado kindly left me the paperback she was reading.  I am looking forward to reading it – Linda Castillo’s SWORN TO SILENCE (“Some secrets are too terrifying to reveal.  Some crimes are too dangerous to solve…”).

As for this month’s give-away books, two great ones:

(Yes, you guessed it.)  HAVE A LITTLE FAITH, A True Story,  by Mitch Albom

and

CHILD 44 by Tom Rob Smith.

Cover info:

In HAVE A LITTLE FAITH, Mitch Albom (TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE) offers a beautifully written story of a remarkable eight-year journey between two worlds – two men, two faiths, two communities – that will inspire readers everywhere.  [The book] begins with an unusual request: an eighty-two-year-old rabbi from Albom’s old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy.  Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he’d left years ago.  Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor – a reformed drug dealer and convict – who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof.  HAVE A LITTLE FAITH is a book about a life’s purpose; about the divine spark inside us all.  It is one man’s journey, but it is everyone’s story.

(Sue’s take: the words, the story, the inner light will delight.)

The August give-away copy is a new jacketed hardcover edition.

CHILD 44 by Tom Rob Smith is a relentless page-turner.  A terrifying look at a paranoid world where no one can be trusted.  Set in Stalin’s Soviet Union where death is a whisper away, this novel is also a surprising, unexpected story of love and family, of hope and resilience, a thriller unlike any you have ever read.

(Sue’s take: and you’ll love the ending!)

The August give-away copy is a new jacketed hardcover edition.

Okay!  Let’s hear about those beach reads!

Blessings!

Sue

  3. Sue, I love your books and hope you write more. Right now, I’m reading “The Farfarers: Before the Norse” by Farley Mowat. Before that, I read “The Snow Walker” by Farley Mowat, “Lost in the Barrens” by Farley Mowat, “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood: A Novel” by Rebecca Wells, and “The Jane Austen Book Club” by Karen Joy Fowler. I agree with Mary, “so many books to read and soooo little time!”

  4. Thank you, Sharon! I love Farley Mowat’s books, but haven’t read “Farfarers.” Another gem added to my list!

  5. If I was on holidays I would read Cry of Silence by Danielle Thomas again.I loved this story. Also something from FBI series by Catherine Coulter & new book!

  6. Gallows View & Wednesdays Child by Peter Robinson, both were great reads. Then I read Twilight & New Moon by Stephanie Meyer and I am just about halfway through Eclipse (the third in the series). These are not books I would have usually read but after being bullied by my daughter to sit through all three of the movies (which to my complete suprise I really enjoyed) I rather regretted not having read the books first.. needless to say I immediatley wrenched the books from my daughters firm grasp and have been totally absorbed! I’m mortified to admit that I have fallen a little in love with the character of Edward (much to my daughters disgust as she is Team Jacob all the way!) I do love a book which brings the characters to life and into your heart so to speak.. that for me is the perfect summer read!..

Incidently my name really is Sue Harrison! … seems we are a common breed 🙂

  7. Hi Sue,

I once did a book signing at a bookstore and one of the attendees was furious with me because I wasn’t the ‘Sue Harrison’ she thought I was. I really didn’t know how to defend myself in that situation. She was pretty wrathy and loud. Life can get interesting! Strength in numbers, though, right?

I’ve read the Twilight series, too, and wasn’t at all enthusiastic at first, but the characters really do come to life. I went back and forth between Team Edward and Team Jacob, depending on the book I was reading at the moment. I haven’t read any of Robinson’s books. I’ll be looking for them!

  8. There is a book coming soon called The Lost Dogs, the story of Michael Vicks dogs in which he used in dog fights. Usually animals used for fighting are put down, but in this case human compassion stepped in and most of the 55 dogs are being rehabilitaded as therapy dogs. Its really amazing how far people will go to right a wrong, reguardless what living creature the wrong was enacted upon.
