Sparkles anyone?

I have  a huge Christmas card list, but I don’t mind sitting down and writing Christmas cards.  It’s actually one of the more restful activities of Christmas, not nearly so taxing as putting lights on trees or trying to figure out what to do with cookies that don’t look at all like the photo in the magazine.  (You’d think substituting white sugar for brown wouldn’t make that much difference….)

This year, I purchased quite a few Christmas cards with sparkles on them.  I love sparkles, which is probably rooted in my childhood.  I was once a dancing pony in a Christmas program, and we ponies had sparkly bells on our red harnesses.  My obsession with sparkles might even have something to do with Hallowe’en costumes.  I can’t really remember what I was on any particular year, but I always tried to sparkle.  My wedding dress sparkled (tastefully, I hope).   My fancy long-dress-I-wear-on-formal-occasions sparkles.

Tonight, however, I’ve somehow managed to get some sparkles off the Christmas cards and into my right eye.  Owie.

Here’s the advantage of being a writer – pain can always be transformed into a story.  Or at least a dreaded “moral of the story”, which this is.  So I promise, short and sweet.

It’s easy to let the sparkle of Christmas eclipse our vision.  Let’s enjoy the sparkle, but let’s also remember that Christmas is all about love.  God loves us so very much that He sent his Son to show us how to love.

Love to all of you, Sue

  1. I remember that you were. Can you believe the work that went into those Christmas programs? My goodness, the costumes (our moms had to make), the songs, the hours of practice. I loved it all, even when I was delegated to the bleachers as a “backup” singer for the ones on stage. Maybe the magic of it all was just that we got out of a lot of classes during December so we could practice!

  2. Sadly, my Mom got scarlet fever before the program and our house was quarantined and I didn’t get to actually be IN the program……but I did get to miss class for most of the practices before she became ill!! I remember it was 1959 because my nephew, Chris, was born that same week and we could only see him through the window for a couple of weeks!! I had forgotten all about that until you mentioned the dancing pony 🙂

  3. I remember how excited I was getting ready for dancing concert and getting our tap shoes painted with silver and all glitter over them.I still have glitter around my home at Xmas & like to buy cards with shiny stuff on them.Sue hope your eye is ok.

  4. Sorry to be so long in getting back to your replies! My husband and I took a trip with two of his cousins to Chicago. We had a great time.

Trish, my eye is good. Thank you for asking!

Lynn, I’d forgotten that you weren’t in the program itself, but I do remember scarlet fever going through our town. There was a year or so when we all had one illness after another – scarlet fever, measles, chicken pox, mumps….

  5. I’m so sorry that I don’t have the capability to translate my website into Spanish. I wish my language skills were stronger!
