The Girl in the Gatehouse

Our October Free Book is the 2011 Christy Award winner in the category of Historical Romance, THE GIRL IN THE GATEHOUSE by Julie Klassen. From the back cover: “Banished from the only home she’s ever known, Mariah Aubrey hides herself away in an abandoned gatehouse on a distant relative’s estate. There she supports herself the only way she knows how – by writing novels in secret. When Captain Matthew Bryant leases the estate, he is intrigued by the beautiful girl in the gatehouse. But there are many things he doesn’t know about this beguiling outcast. Will he risk his plans – and his heart – for a woman shadowed by scandal?”

THE GIRL IN THE GATEHOUSE is set in the Regency Period in England, which seems very romantic to many of us, but in those days it was very difficult for women to pursue a career. One of the most famous authors of that period was Jane Austen, and yet during her lifetime her name did not appear in any of her novels. Men seldom had the option of pursuing a job different from what their fathers or grandfathers had done. Even men of the upper classes were bound by the ownership of estates and the tradition of inheritance of all titles and lands by the oldest son.

Q4U: Which would you prefer – a life within the upper class of Regency England (1811-1820) or your life now in the everyday world of the 21st Century?

Leave a comment and your name will be included in the drawing on October 31 for a free copy of THE GIRL IN THE GATEHOUSE!

Blessings!

  1. That depends–do I get a handsome secret admirer from the landed gentry?? Haha!! Oh, who am I kidding, I wouldn’t last one week without access to comfy jeans and a laptop!!! I’m trying to imagine my hand writing via quill pen…yikes!

  2. Yeah, I’d have to go with comfy jeans and laptop, and more importantly, TAKEOUT! It’d be fun to time travel, though.

  3. That is a tough question. The life now has tons of advantages, but it lacks the class and elegance of Regency England. In my heart, I know the sweeping elegant dresses and elaborate parties of Regency England is the place I most connect with. Of course, I would miss using the internet and the sheer amount of information provided to this society. So…Regency England is the place for me.

  4. I would like to think I could , but I’m not sure. , you would have to wear dresses and other various under garments (to many). But a book you can let your mind take you there and imagine your self living in that time period. I have always wonder what it most have been like to sail across the ocean for months or the prairie in a covered wagon.

  5. My grandmother always said that she wished she would’ve been a pioneer. I would’ve been okay with the long walk, but any kind of warfare on the trail would have been terrible.

Linda, I wonder about the underclothes, too! Corsets? NOT!

  6. Looks like a good book!
    I like historical romance.
Maybe one day I’ll get back to writing my book.
