Puppy Love/ Cocker Spaniel

The first dog my husband and I owned after we married was our golden-red Cocker Spaniel. We chose him from a litter of 11 puppies owned by friends of ours, and when he was four weeks old Mama Cocker wouldn’t feed her puppies anymore. The owners were so overwhelmed by hand-feeling 11 babies, that they allowed us to take our little puppy home. We realized that we had a bumpy road ahead of us. Another of our friends remarked that the puppy would be lucky if he lived, and the name stuck. Lucky did live and was with us for his whole life.

He was a sweet, even-tempered dog, who maintained a strong friendship with our big golden-red tom cat. I’ll never forget the day they both came to the door after having surprised a skunk. That skunk was probably boasting to its friends, “Two with one spray!” Oh joy!

I hope you enjoy the puppy pictures below!

Do you or have you ever owned a Cocker Spaniel?

Blessings!

  1. Sue! that is such a cute story. I have a red/golden cocker spaniel, her name is Molly, she was the last of the litter, just like yours! Our Molly is nearly 2 and ever so sweet and smart.

I thought the first year was very very difficult, all the biting and chewing on furniture, children’s toys, shoes, mail .. I sometimes pulled my hair out in despair.

As soon as Molly got all her “adult teeth” she stopped biting and chewing on everything and calmed down a lot.

We totally love and adore her, such a great family dog. Sometimes she smiles! which is the funniest thing ever.

  2. Thank you. We had the chewing problem with Lucky, too, but he calmed down when he was older. It’s funny to know that your Molly and our Lucky are so much alike!!

  3. My first dog was an American Cocker we called Perky. He was from a purebred litter but very tiny, and my parents were told he was a “runt” and they could have him for free. He surprised everyone by growing into a normal-sized and good-looking dog.

His temperament was less than ideal, but he was devoted to our family… so much so that when we went away on a vacation and left him with my grandparents one summer, he slipped out of their house and tried to come home. Unfortunately he didn’t make it… he “encountered” a car… and I was heartbroken, of course.

Perky was the only Cocker we ever owned. My parents had a few Labrador Retrievers after that, and as an adult I’ve had a series of Labs and Shelties.

  4. I currently have a cocker spaniel and his name is Elliott. I guess I’ll have to post a picture on my facebook page so you can see him!
