Eastern European Research Trip – Iron Gate

When Neil and I were making plans to visit Eastern Europe, one of the reasons we selected a river cruise was the opportunity to see the Iron Gate Gorge in Serbia. Many ancient peoples settled in the Gorge area. One of the sites, Lepenski Vir, dates back to 6500 B.C. Perfect “fodder” for my novel BONE FIRE!

So, come on along with us today as we cruise through this beautiful area of the world!

Here we are on the top deck, as the land gradually rises around us.

Do you notice the very modern bridge at the right of the photo? We didn’t see much traffic on it. Just a few cars.

We’re told that the cliffs are mostly made of limestone.

Our temperature is around 53 degrees F./12 degrees C. so we’re glad we packed warm fleece jackets! (My husband Neil and his camera.)

Going through the Iron Gate Gorge! Geologists tell us that the other types of rock besides limestone that make up the Gorge formations include slate, Jurassic sandstones, and quartz porphyries.  In a nearby valley (Svinita) archaeologists have found sites where prehistoric settlers dug up flint and chert. (Can you imagine living in this area in prehistoric times? People had to be tough in those days.)

For us, a day on board the Jarl is relaxing and incredibly interesting. In the evening, we bid farewell to the Iron Gates and to the country of Serbia.

I hope you enjoy these Serbian proverbs that were included in our “Viking Daily” newsletter.

  • He who digs a trap for others ends up in it himself
  • Be humble for you are made of earth. Be noble for you are made of stars.
  • A portly woman is always the best cook
  • Trust yourself and your horse.

Tomorrow, Bulgaria!

Happy Traveling!

Sue
