As you might expect, my husband and I have many things in common, including – unfortunately – family feuds. We both had grandmothers who during a dispute over inheritance cut off contact with siblings. However, for my husband’s family, there is a happy ending. Eventually, a generation away from the feud, they mended fences.
A family can be torn apart by disagreement, and for generations after they can justify actions carried out IN SPITE….
When hearts turn toward God, and people forgive as He forgives through Jesus Christ, then love replaces anger, relationships know reconciliation, and acts of kindness occur IN SPITE OF….
Sometimes one small word can make all the difference in the world.
Praying that your story will have a happy ending, Hazel. Blessings to you and your daughter-in-law! Sue
I love the use of your word SPITE !! I also smiled at the situations sad and at least one family reconciled. Reminds me of my story about Butting heads with my daughter-in-law. Naturally the story does not have an ending yet, and time will tell.
Absolutely, Glynn. There are few things more satisfying than the self-righteousness of “knowing” we are right! When I’m fostering that kind of attitude, God has to step in and whap me alongside my head to make me realize that self-righteous is a long way from righteous.
I think sometimes we often (secretly) relish a feud, and keep finding things to stoke it because (a) we know we’re right and (b) we want whomever we’re feuding with to acknoledge that we’re right. My father and one of his sisters didn’t speak for 40 years — and what a waste of family that was for all of us.
Good post.
