About Fruit Cake
When I was a child, we always received a Christmas package from my Grandma Kate and Grandpa Bob, and another from my aunt’s mother, Mrs. Tost. Grandma Kate’s box included a generous chunk of her dark fruit cake. Mrs. Tost, who lived a very elegant and privileged life, sent us a plum pudding and rum sauce in a very fancy box that displayed the name of a very fancy store.
I LOVED receiving these packages. Grandma and Grandpa’s also included presents that had to wait under the tree until Christmas morning, but we were allowed to dive into her fruitcake right away. We saved Mrs. Tost’s plum pudding for our Christmas dinner. My brother Bob, however, was never very excited about the plum pudding from Mrs. Tost or about our grandmother’s fruitcake. His lack of Christmas spirit in this regard always mystified me.
I’ve since come to realize that the world is divided into two kinds of folks, those who LOVE fruit cake and plum pudding and those who HATE them. There doesn’t seem to be any middle ground in the debate!
So what about you? Are you a lover of fruit cake and plum pudding or do you hate them?
Blessings!

Ah, wax paper. I was wondering how they did that.
I’m sad for you about the gluten/lactose free stuff, Lynn. That has to be tough. My brother can’t eat red meat or any “mammal’ products – milk, whey, etc. His allergic reactions to any of that are life-threatening. I admire anyone who can deal with allery, food-intolerance successfully. It has to take a lot of will power!
I think some people wrap money in little pieces of wax paper, don’t they? .. for inside cakes.
I like both dark and light fruit cake now although I didn’t care much for it as a child, but I always loved plum pudding. The problem now is that I have to eat gluten-free, lactose free and other ‘free’s’ (*sigh*) .. I miss out on those goodies unless I cheat on my diet in a small way. So hard to resist.
The White Fruit Cake I make each Christmas is loaded with glazed fruit, white raisins and sliced blanched almonds . Mmm mmm good! 🙂
Okay, Trish, how do you put the money in?
Isn’t it fun to remember childhood traditions 🙂 I guess it is a sign we are getting older – lol……but it is fun (and we are lucky) to have such great memories!! I am curious though as to how the money was placed in the plum pudding???
Hmmm, I think even my brother Bob would’ve liked plum pudding if it had money in it, Trish!
My Mum used to make both & put money in plum pudding .There was always a dash to get serving of the pudding just to get some pocket money whether you liked it or not. I dont like either? The custard was always very nice>
Oh, Ginny, your mother’s fruitcake sounds scrumptious! I’ve never had a fruit cake made with dried fruits. YUM!
I loved my mom’s fruit cake, but no one elses. She made a light colored one with lots of big nuts and dried fruit rather than all fruit peel. Many people bought her fruitcake for years at the Pickford Craft Fair. Good memories.
