About Horses

When I was eight years old, my my best friend’s mom took a group of us kids to the fair. We decided to spend some of our tickets on a pony ride. I had my heart set on the little white pony. He was lovely. However, while I was waiting my turn in line for that white pony, the guy who was in charge of the rides came over and told me in a loud voice that I was too fat to ride the white pony, I had to ride the brown.

The brown was homely and ordinary and I was disappointed, but he gave me a wonderful ride. He loved the ear rub I gave him. And he tolerated the hug.

I’m not a great rider, but I love being around horses. I love watching them, sketching them and seeing other people ride them in wondrous ways. Horses see through to the heart. If you’re afraid, they know it. If you love them, they know it. If you’re a fat little kid, sometimes a very special horse will give you a ride anyway.

I love horses.

Do you?

Blessings!

  1. I have to admit, Sue, I love horses from a distance. Whenever I get up close I’m quite frightened. There’s really no reason for this fear only their size and my imagination at play.

  2. It’s amazing how our childhood experiences shape our self-image. I’ve always thought of myself as ‘fat’ no matter what I weigh. Now I know that what I am inside is so much more important than what I weigh. (But I AM trying to get that Christmas weight off!)

  3. I think the guy probably said “you weigh too much” and you heard “you’re fat” – lol. The white pony was probably for smaller/younger children. We all went through that pudgy stage but you were NEVER fat!!! To answer your question……..I wish I could ride and wasn’t afraid of the size of horses. They just seem so BIG to me when I get close to them and when on a horse it seems so FAR to the ground!! When watching someone else, it looks easy and fun though.
