About insects

I’ve never been an insect-lover. Not flies, not cute little lady bugs, not cockroaches (which we don’t have up here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan – Hooray!), not fleas or… I could go on almost forever, couldn’t I?

I know insects are necessary to our ecology and part of God’s plan, and I can claim an occasional interest in ants, (If they’re not in my house or my food.) but really, I’ve never been a fan.

UNTIL…

A friend of ours, Cody,  raises crickets, and, in conversations with him, I’ve come to realize that they are fascinating little beasts. And, according to Cody, LOUD! They make their “song” by rubbing their wings together. The cricket holds the wings up and open, so that the wing membranes can act like miniature loud speakers. Only the males sing, and they use four different melodies to court their ladies. Amazing! Any creature who greets the world with song – no matter how they “sing” it or how they sound – really takes my heart. Oh no, am I becoming a fan of insects?

Well, maybe just crickets!

How About You – Do you have an insect that you hate the most? Or one that you love the most?  Could you be happy as an entomologist?

Blessings!

Sue

  1. Sue you wouldn’t want to be over here in Perth the heat brings out the cockroache’s you find them in the bins & pot plants and they sneak inside sometimes awful things. I don’t like creepy crawly things!!! No cocky’s in Michigan Wow you are so lucky. Today we have had big summer storm & it’s bought out the little Turtle’s from the Lake & they are trying to cross the busy road and getting killed so sad.Do you have turtle’s in your lake?

  2. Definitely a ‘no’ to your last two questions! I don’t mind encountering bugs out in their domain when I’m gardening, but I don’t like them on me or in my house. Just looking at Cody’s photos makes my skin crawl. And spiders… well, they freak me out. But I admit there’s a lot to admire about how insects function, and spider webs are fascinating.

  3. I am sort of neutral about bugs in general. Don’t love them, don’t hate them, but my son of course is fascinated by them. We both loved this post and the pictures! Thanks Sue and Cody 🙂
