GOBLIN!
Wild Word Friday!
Do you remember when you were a kid and there was something absolutely delicious about being pretend-scared? Not truly afraid, just pretend-scared. When children go out to trick-or-treat, they dress up like monsters and GOBLINs and black cats and ghosts and pretend to be scary, and, when they come to our doors for candy, most of us pretend to be scared. At least a little bit.
I must admit that to me, GOBLINs do seem to be particularly scary. There’s something about green skin and bloodshot eyes that sends shivers down my back. And evidently, not just down my back but down the backs of ancient speakers of Latin who gave us the word gobelinus, a modification of the Greek word kobalos, a rogue spirit that resembles a satyr.
So when you welcome trick-or-treaters to your door this year, remember that GOBLINs have been around for a long, long time. But, as far as I know, unlike vampires who can be vanquished only with a silver stake through the heart, our trick-or-treat GOBLINs can usually be conquered with a handful of miniature chocolate bars!
How many trick-or-treat kids usually come to your house? We live back far enough in the boonies that we usually don’t get any, but I always buy a bag of chocolate bars – just in case! (And then I get to eat them – if my husband or dad-in-law don’t find them first.)
Blessings!
Sue
