August 2018 FREE BOOK!
Throughout the years of my writing career, one of the great joys for both my husband Neil and me has been to get to know other writers. Two of our favorite writer friends are the husband and wife team, William (Michael) Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gear. Together they have given the world an incredible body of fascinating books, including the quintessential prehistoric series that many people call “The People Of….” Series. In addition to working together on novels, they also write books individually. Characterized by incredibly detailed and accurate research and unforgettable characters, all their novels reach out and pull you into other lives and other places.
This month our Free Book, THIS SCORCHED EARTH, an epic family saga, was penned by William Gear. From the jacket copy: “The Civil War tore at the very roots of our nation and destroyed most of a generation. To truly understand the madness and despair of such a horrendous conflict, one needs to pick a moment. Or see that war through one family’s eyes. In rural Arkansas, such was the Hancocks. Devastated by a cruel war, they faced down their personal hells and in spite of it all survived. Their survival is a testament to the power of love…”
Our give-away copy is a new hardcover edition. To have your name included in the Wednesday, August 15 drawing, just answer one or both of these questions: Have you ever visited a Civil War battlefield or memorial? Did any of your ancestors fight in the Civil War?
I love hearing from all of you. Lisa MacDonald, I hope to tour Andersonville someday, too, but like Sophie, I will have to “turn my head” during some of it. Willard Nichols this book will interest you because much of it is set in Arkansas, my father’s home state. As I stated over on FB, Ron, thank you for your part in developing Mine Creek. If we lose our history, we lose ourselves. Anita Hart, as am I. The hurt runs deep, doesn’t. We still feel it 3 generations later. And what an inspiration she must be to you Mary B. Knapp! I look forward to reading your book. Caroline, I don’t know how I would react in that situation. I’m glad you could be there for your friend. Rhonda Wood, I’m so glad for you that you have that much information about your relative.
I have been to several Civil War battlefields and was instrumental in developing Mine Creek Battlefield in Linn County Kansas.
I was not able to find any ancestors who fought on either side.
No. I’ve read quite a few books on the Civil war. And I don’t know if any family member was involved in this war.
I have not visited a Civil War battlefield or memorial, yet. I did have ancestors that fought on both sides of the war.
Yes, I have been to at least one of the Civil War sights.
and no I don’t know if I’m a decendent of it.
my parents were born in Texas ( mom) Arkansas (dad).
.
I have been to Gettysburg and watch some movies about the Civil war ( which I have to turn my head during the nasty scenes), Also have been to some sites in the South which I can’t recall. The older I get the more I like to read about our history, for some reason when I was in school I was not interested … so I am making up for lost learning opportunities… LOL 🙂 I do not know of any relatives that I am aware of that fought in the war as my relatives all migrated over from Germany, Finland, France and Crotia… I think after that time period.
After attending a good friend’s father’s 10-gun-salute-funeral at Aarlington Cemetry in 2014 we drove theough Pennsylvania and stopped at Gettysburg. My parents were immigrants but war was not a foreign concept to them, unfortunately and the utter patriotism my mother felt for the US had a trickle- down effect. The whole experience was powerful in exploring our adopted roots.
Yes I stop at every Civil War battlefield/monument and pay my respects from Pea Ridge Arkansas to Vicksburg Mississippi and anywhere else . I am descendent ftom both sides of that war.
I have visited the Battle of Vicksburg, Natchez MS and Gettysburg.
Two., I have a relative on my mother’s side , Enoch Hunter Enlisted as a Private. UNION 194th Infantry Regiment Ohio, enlisted March 13, 1865, mustered out out Company H, 194th Infantry Ohio on Feb 24th 1865 in Washington DC.
Yes. We love to stop at civil war era cemeteries when we travel south. My husband also wants to tour Andersonville, GA. Neither of us have ancestors that fought in the war.
Both my mother’s grandfathers served in the Civil War. Her maternal grandfather came through it, and later settled in Northern Michigan. Her paternal grandfather was in several battles, but spent time in and out of the camp hospital because of the fevers which were so prevalent in the camps. He succumbed to cholera there in July, 1862, leaving his wife and four children. She was the amazing woman who was the inspiration for my novel (to be published) I mentioned to you before. ~ Marysia
Wow, Amy C. That is such an interesting family history. Thank you for sharing!
I have visited Gettysburg. I had many ancestors who fought in the Civil War. Two being at Appomattox during the surrender, another being a POW, one being wounded and disabled the rest of his life, and sadly another that died of Typoid Fever.
