Small Joys–Something New

I love to try planting new things in my garden. This year, that “new” plant was the tomatillo. I’d planned to grow more tomatoes than usual but for some reason the COVID restrictions in Michigan severely limited our choices when it came to plants. We have a very short growing season in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, so I always buy tomato plants rather than try to grow them from seeds. This year most of the tomato plants available in our area were cherry tomatoes, which are wonderful to eat fresh but not right to can for winter stews, goulash, and spaghetti sauce. I did, however, find two tomatillo plants and thought it would be fun to try them out in our Far Northern garden. Guess what? They grew abundantly!

I even had enough to can a few jars for winter use. I look forward to making salsa verde!

Did you grow a garden this year? If so, did you try anything different?

Happy “something new,”

Sue
