May 2025 FREE BOOK!
We have a wonderful picture book as our Free Book this month: WINGS OF AN EAGLE, THE GOLD MEDAL DREAMS OF BILLY MILLS.
In this book, Billy Mills and Donna Janell Bowman bring us the autobiographical tale of Native American Billy Mills, once an orphan on the Oglala Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation, and his pursuit of the gold in the 10,000 meter race. The beautiful art throughout is by S. D. Nelson.
From the back cover: “Most people in the crowd don’t notice me. They don’t know that I am Oglala Lakota. They don’t know that I have wings. But in 25 laps. 10,000 meters, 6.2 miles…THEY WILL.”

This book gives me chills of joy and tears of amazement. Our give away copy is a new hardcover edition.
To have your name included in our Wednesday, May 21 drawing, just answer this question: Have you ever participated in a track meet or cheered on those who did?
To answer my own question–I wanted with all my heart to be a miler on our Pickford High School Track Team. I am no athlete. I would have been the last to finish, but I loved the idea of running, and I used to go outside and run, even though I was not allowed to participate on the team. In those days, girls were not allowed to participate in track. That broke my heart. BUT I SURELY DID CHEER FOR OUR TEAM, for my children and their children, who all turned out to be runners, either in middle school and high school or as adults.
Happy Reading!
