Foxy
We have a fox. Well, we really don’t HAVE a fox, but he lives somewhere near our house. Several times during the day, we see him trot across our snowy front yard, and a little later he trots back, usually with something in his mouth. Fox food, I assume.
The other day, my husband and I saw him suddenly stop, perk up his ears and tilt his head toward the snow. Then he launched himself skyward and came down on all fours. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a well-executed pounce. He was obviously after some little critter that had dug tunnels under the snow – winter mouse highways.
Unfortunately for our fox – and fortunately for the critter – the snow crust was packed so hard that the fox didn’t break through. He stood there for a second and slanted down his ears like a displeased cat. Then he took a couple of uncertain backward steps. I’m pretty sure he was tempted to go home in defeat.
Of course this particular fox has just survived months of a very cold winter. He still looks fat and healthy. You don’t do that without owning a great deal of determination. The fox shook himself as if he were shaking off his disappointment, and he continued his foraging. A little later back he came with fox food in his mouth.
It’s amazing, isn’t it, how God’s creatures can teach us such good lessons?
Happy Learning!
