FATHER

Wild Word Friday!

We couldn’t do a post last week about the word mother without including one this week about FATHER. My FATHER is a retired teacher and an active golfer. At age 84 he still regularly shoots in the low 40s and that’s after having back surgery last year. My FATHER always made life fun for us kids (5 of us) with silly songs and made-up games and all kinds of chicanery.

Like the word mother, FATHER is a nursery word that comes to us via the help of babies worldwide and a little consonant shift between the letters b,  p and f. B is more difficult to say than p and p is more difficult to say (at least for me) than f. As often is the case with a word of widespread use people get lazy and opt for the easier pronunciation.  Baba is probably the original form of papa. Thus we have words for FATHER that range from the Italian babbo to French pere to Swedish and Danish fader. I also like the Welsh and Breton word tad, which here in the U.S. is pronounced as dad.  Lots of choices!

Request4U: Tell us about your FATHER.

Blessings!

Sue
