RING

Wild Word Friday!

As we are poised to RING out the old year and RING in the new, let’s take a look at the word RING. In Middle English ringen is the verb form, not too surprising. In Anglo Saxon, we add an h to give us hringan. I like saying the Anglo Saxon form. Adding that h forces a rolled r.

If we take RING all the way back to Indo-European, we find the ancient word base to be  ker- or kor-, which is an onomatopoeic form that is also the base for words like creak, raven and scream. RING has interesting cousins, doesn’t it!

So how do you RING in the New Year?

Blessings!

  1. My husband and I learned about a tradition from a Spanish exchange student which we have now adopted as our own; on New Year’s Eve we eat twelve grapes twelve minutes before midnight and make twelve wishes for the New Year.
