DETECTIVE

Wild Word Friday!

When I was growing up, my parents bought my brother and I a board game each year for Christmas. One of my all-time favorites was Clue. You’ve probably played that game and remember hearing (or making) a triumphant announcement that went something like this – “Miss Scarlett with the lead pipe in the kitchen!” The mystery solved! (Or horror of horrors, you’re wrong and eliminated from the game.) It’s just a lot of fun to be the DETECTIVE, or to read a book that allows you to look over the shoulder of the DETECTIVE as he or she solves the mystery and apprehends the criminal.

DETECTIVE – the word – is rooted in the Latin detectus, past participle of detegere. If you break detegere down, you have de – from – and tegere – to cover – from cover or  uncover.

I’ve read a lot of DETECTIVE books and have cheered on DETECTIVEs who are police officers, little kids, monks, archaeologists, dogs, housewives and international spies. Lately one of my favorite DETECTIVEs is Charlie Kerrian. Charlie Kerrian is an online DETECTIVE, and I’ve had a lot of fun following his world travels as he solves mysteries on the pages of  Patti Philips’ Blog Kerrian’s Notebook. If you love to solve mysteries, drop in and pay Kerrian a visit:

Q4U: Do you have a favorite DETECTIVE that you “met” in a movie, television show, or a novel?

Blessings!

  1. Hi Sue,
One of the gals who reads ‘Kerrian’s Notebook’ told me that you mentioned the site on Wild Word Friday, under ‘Detective.’ I’ve been a detective for over ten years – a desk sergeant and a beat cop before that. My best days are spent solving murder cases and figuring out why somebody thought a fellow human being ought to be killed. Somebody needs to stand up for the victims.
Thanks for keeping up with Kerrian’s Notebook!
    Best regards from Charlie Kerrian!
    (Sheila says ‘hi’ too)
