A Glance Back — Cedar Cove

At least once a day, my father goes through these doors with a smile on his face and an ache in his heart.

He goes there because the love of his life is spending her last days being loved and cared for by the kind and competent staff at Cedar Cove Assisted Living.

IMG_0150My mother is afflicted with white matter dementia, which has robbed her of most of her speech and ability to move and her ability to comprehend visual images on a three-dimensional plane. Now finally, even many of her memories have faded, but she still holds tightly to one thing. She knows she is loved — by my dad, by her children and grandchildren, by her friends and family, and by her “new” family at Cedar Cove — those who live there, those who care there, those who visit there.

  4. A distant cousin in my dad’s family is Mari Sandoz who wrote Cheyenne Autumn, a bestseller back in the 1940s/50s, but I think my love of words comes as much from seeing my parents (and grandparents) reading, reading, reading as from any genetic propensity. I’m so grateful that they read to all of us kids, too!

  5. Sue, thank you for sharing. I forgot about your dad writing. I guess that is where you got your “special way with words” too. Love the pictures.
