Small Joys–The Egg Hunt

Do you have an Easter Egg story? My family does. Years ago, when I was about 15, our family was nearly complete with 4 of our 5 children. My brother Bob was 13. Brother Roger was nearly 4 and sister Tish, almost 2. We didn’t yet have my brother John. The Easter egg search was a big deal to us, and we all participated in dying eggs the Saturday before Easter. That night Mom and Dad would hide them. Some were very well hidden and those were the eggs Bob and I were supposed to find. Others, not so difficult to search out, were for Roger and Tish. The total number was usually 12, but on this particular Easter, no matter where we looked, we could not find that last egg. We finally settled for 11.

Dial ahead one year to the next Easter. Twelve eggs again, four kids. When our hunt was complete, Mom was placing the eggs in a bowl at the center of our table and noticed the total number was thirteen. Horrors! We’d found last year’s lost egg. The problem was we couldn’t tell it from any of the others. It hadn’t cracked in any way, so there was no disagreeable odor. It turned out that none of us was brave enough to peel even one of the eggs, just in case it was THE ONE. We’ve laughed about that egg hunt ever since….

Happy Egg Hunting,

Sue

  1. And for just such a reason we gave up hiding real eggs and resorted to plastic eggs with small treats and money tucked inside for the kiddos to find!
