August 2023 FREE BOOKS!

We are delighted to give away two wonderful books this month, both of which celebrate Summers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula!

VIEW FROM THE SIDEROAD by Sharon M. Kennedy: [From the cover copy] “Join us for a trip through Michigan’s rural Upper Peninsula in this collection of fictional short stories. Whether it’s a sailor who shuns water…or a man who keeps his lover in the junk drawer, the stories range from witty to wry to weepy. Sharon is a master of the short form. As readers of her newspaper column and previous collections will attest, she never disappoints.”

SUMMERS AT THE LAKE by Jon C. Stott: [From the cover copy] Paddling a canoe into sunrise on the longest day of the year…watching a child take her first kayak ride with her father…gazing at a bald eagle, riding air currents high above the lake…These are some of the moments and memories depicted in SUMMERS AT THE LAKE. The essays–often humorous; sometimes tinged with a sweet melancholy–celebrate the people and events marking the progress of the seasons….These prose poems capture the joy of simple, lake-side living and quiet reflection.”

I love both books and found much joy in reading them. Our give-away copies are new editions, the Jon C. Stott book a signed hardcover, the Sharon M. Kennedy book a trade paperback. To have your name included in our Wednesday, August 16 drawing just answer this question: What is your favorite season of the year?

Happy Reading,

Sue

  1. Our comments here and on my FB pages span all the seasons, with Fall and Spring and Summer outpacing Winter. I love to read the comments and note (when it’s possible) where people live, which seems to be a determining factor in what season is the favorite. In the “fall color” states/provinces/countries, fall preferences dominate. In moderate temperature areas, people seem to prefer summer, and where spring is gorgeous, spring dominates. Here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, spring is mostly mud, mosquitoes, and cold weather, so it is not my favorite, but winters are pristine and often isolating, which I love. For me that means time to write!! Our falls are gorgeous, especially late September and early October and summers at the many beaches in our area are lovely!! My friend Ans de Groot of the Netherlands loves Spring and when I think of the tulips blooming there, I totally understand!!

  2. My favorite season is fall. The hustle and bustle of gathering subsistence is over and it is time to get ready to hunt for moose, the kids are going back to school. The Indian summer days are limited but also my favoritest days where the sun is super warm out, it’s breezy and we go for boat rides to the lake for picnics and to get some spawned out salmon to freeze. Then it is starts to rain and rain and I cannot wait for it to turn into snow but it’s also so beautiful to see all the leaves turn colors and blow away in the wind.
