MAKING STRANGE
Wild Word Friday! When my family first moved to our little town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, some of the phrases and words used by local folks weren’t familiar to us. One of these phrases was MAKING STRANGE. When you were introduced to a baby for the first (or fifth) time and he began to wail, his…
Small Joys–Earrings!
These earrings have just found a sweet nook in my jewelry box. They’re replicas of the glass floats used years and years ago for fishing nets by Asian and sometimes American fishermen. Nestled against a boomerang given to me by an Australian friend (Thank you, Trish!), and a replica of a scrimshawed walrus tusk, are…
PLEONEXIA
Wild Word Friday! I’ve been reading Bill Giovannetti’s recently released book SECRETS TO A HAPPY LIFE. (Don’t miss this book. It’s incredible. Find out about it here: http://www.secretstoahappylife.org/ ) On page 62, Bill uses the word PLEONEXIA. Bill tells us that we should pronounce it as play-oh-nex-EEE-ah, and he explains that PLEONEXIA is a Greek…
Puppy Love / Dachshund
Several of my friends, and also my parents, own dachshunds. I don’t know about you, but when I see a dachshund, I just smile. With a tummy so low to the ground you’d think that they would have a lot to complain about, but they are seldom grumpy. Dachshunds – both standards and minis –…
I’m glad I had it right, Jackie. Meat and 2 veg. That’s a good way to say it!
O that dinner sounds VERY Irish Sue. That is exactly what my parents-in-law eat once a week. Also known here as: meat and 2 veg.
Probably American Irish isn’t very Irish at all as far as dinners go, Jackie! Corned beef and cabbage, onions, potatoes, carrots.
I love hearing about your visit to the zoo. What a great gift idea, and you are making such beautiful memories!! I love the idea of the memorial cross, too. I know the Pope is called of God, but I still think that has to be one of the most difficult ‘jobs’ (don’t know if that’s the right term) in the world!
I would love to know what’s on the menu for the Irish supper Sue.
We had great craic at the zoo, it was very busy , people dressed in green and generally very happy. The children loved it, last year we received a great gift from my mother-in-law : an annual pass to Dublin zoo, it is only 15 minutes away and we go there often, the zoo is located in Phoenix park a fantastic 700 acre park with beautiful nature, wild deer and stately homes, in the middle of the park is a gigantic cross known as the papal cross . The pope came to Ireland in 1973 or 1979 I forgot which date exactly and the people of Ireland came together and build the cross. Very impressive I must say.
I hope you had a great time, Jackie! In Pickford we have too much snow and cold for a parade, but lots of folks are wearing green, and Neil’s cousin is doing his annual “step dance,” which is what folks around here call Irish dancing. Our daughter will be home to visit this weekend and we are planning an Irish supper. All so much fun!
Happy st. Patrick’s day Sue and Neil! anything “green” going on in Pickford?
We are heading for the zoo, storytelling, leprechaun hunts, arts and crafts for the children, should be fun!
