CIGAR

Wild Word Friday!

CIGARs are not in style. They are not healthy. They are not cool. They are not smart. (Can you can tell I’m highly opinionated about the subject?)

My maternal grandfather (Granddaddy) was a smoker of CIGARs. I’m quite sure they shortened his life. (He died of a heart attack at age 69. His mother lived to be almost 99.) I can also tell you that he smoked very, very good CIGARs. They actually smelled aromatic and didn’t give me headaches. That’s always a plus for a CIGAR.

Generally I’m quite prejudiced against CIGARs. However, I’m the first to admit that the word CIGAR has a very interesting history. It’s a derivative of the Spanish word cigarra, which means cicada.Yep, the insect. The name evidently came about because people thought CIGARs looked a lot like cicadas, and when you think about it, they do.

Yuck, but an interesting Yuck.

Q4U: Do you have a candidate word for our Wild Word Fridays? Just post the word or words and I’ll do my best to sleuth out their backgrounds.

Blessings!

Sue
