Oct. Free Books!

We have two great books for give-away this month.  As I mentioned in a previous Blog, I’m trying to get more organized with my posting, so from now on, our Free Book days are the first and last of each month.  Check this Blog on Sunday, October 31, for the winners of this month’s free books.

The October books are WORLD WITHOUT END by Ken Follett and A TAILOR-MADE BRIDE by Karen Witemeyer http://www.karenwitemeyer.com/.   WORLD WITHOUT END is a new mass market paperback.  A TAILOR-MADE BRIDE is a new trade paperback edition.

WORLD WITHOUT END is the sequel to Ken Follett’s worldwide bestseller THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH.  It is a very good read even if you haven’t read PILLARS.  They both stand alone marvelously.    COVER BLUB: In 1989, Ken Follett astonished the literary world with THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH, a sweeping epic novel set in 12th-century England that centered on the building of a cathedral…  Two centuries after the townspeople of Kingsbridge finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral, four children slip into the forest and witness a killing – an event that will braid their lives together by ambition, love, greed, and revenge.  FROM THE LOS ANGELES TIMES:  A breathless entertainment.

A TAILOR-MADE BRIDE is Witemeyer’s first novel.  It’s a very entertaining read.  COVER BLUB: Jericho Tucker wants nothing to do with the new dressmaker in Coventry, Texas.  He’s all too familiar with her kind — shallow women more devoted to fashion than true beauty.  Yet, except for her well-tailored clothes, this seamstress is not at all what he expected.  Hannah Richards is confounded by the man who runs the livery.  The unsmiling fellow riles her with his arrogant assumptions and gruff manner, while at the same time stirring her heart with unexpected acts of kindness.  Which side of Jericho Tucker reflects the real man?

October is a month that always makes me want to snuggle in with a good book.  (It gets cold here in Michigan!)  I’m currently reading  THE PREACHER’S BRIDE by Jody Hedlund and loving it.  This fictionalized account of John and Elizabeth Bunyan’s courtship is beautifully written, well-researched, and definitely a “take your heart” story.   Check out Jody’s Blog at http://jodyhedlund.blogspot.com/ .  THE KITCHEN HOUSE by Kathleen Grissom is next on my “list”.  That is my Pickford Readers’ Group book-of-choice for October.   (Which meets at my house this month – yikes!  I’d better run the vacuum, eh?)  I’ve heard a lot of good things about this book and can’t wait to read it!

Q4U:  What are you currently reading or planning to read?  Your post earns you a place in the Oct. 31 drawing for October Free Books!  First name drawn gets his/her choice of the books.

Blessings!  Sue

  1. I’m just finishing While My Pretty One Sleeps by Mary Higgins Clark – I don’t typically read genre fiction, but this book has proven that the bad wrap some genres get as inferior fiction is undeserved. A good, well-told story transcends genre!

  5. You sound like our daughter. She did some bow and arrow deer hunting when she was in high school. No luck with deer though. The one she “almost got” was gone by the time she put her book down and got her foot untangled from her bow… We had to laugh about that one!

  12. Hello Sue,
Since I ‘love’ books I made it my goal to read much more this year, including reading through the Bible again, and I’m keeping track of my progress on my blog. Last month I finished reading Gone With The Wind, which took me longer than expected, and this month one book I read was Max Lucado’s Out Live Your Life. I also have some new books which I plan to read soon (but maybe not until after NaNoWriMo) — Snow Day by Billy Coffey, The Shy Writer by C. Hope Clark, and The Improper Life of Bezellia Grove by Susan Gregg Gilmore – to name only a few.
My interests are varied, and although I prefer to stay away from some particular themes, I do enjoy a good read. There are so many good authors out there.

  13. Lynn, you might want to post on our November Free Books! Give-away, Monday, Nov. 1, which features SNOW DAY. It’s a great book. I’m a Max Lucado fan, too. I need to purchase some of his books for our give-aways.

Our church is beginning a “through the Bible in one year” challenge in January. I’ll check out your Blog!

  14. Sue, I just received the copy of Encompass magazine, and appreciate your review of CODE BLUE. I notice you’re featuring Billy Coffey’s SNOW DAY next month. Just finished it–a truly feel-good book. Who says there are no Christian books worth reading?
    Keep up the good work.

  15. Absolutely! We are fortunate to have so many great Christian writers out there. I’m looking forward to reading your next, Richard, MEDICAL ERROR. I’m having a wonderful time reviewing inspirational novels for “Encompass,” a totally new experience for me.
