Fish

Tonight the 3-day Walleye Jamboree, held yearly on our bay, begins at 1 a.m.   It looks like a little city out there with all the shanties on the ice.

Now why anybody would get up at 1 a.m. to fish walleye, or choose to fish all night, I’m not sure.  But then I’m not a dedicated fisherperson.

My husband is pretty dedicated, but not 1 a.m. dedicated.

I have to admit that when it comes to fish, walleye are top notch.  They are big enough to be fun to catch (over fifteen inches to be legal here).  They taste great – mild and a little sweet – and during walleye season we eat so much fresh fish (except during bad years when you don’t catch any!) that I lose some weight and my cholesterol levels go down.  All good.  But 1 a.m. good?

Maybe the prizes help.  Six hundred dollars to the catcher of the biggest fish.  That’s a great incentive.  Of course, the cost of fishing walleyes – snowmobiles, gas, shacks, snacks, warm clothes – adds up.  Maybe it’s more about the possibility of being THE ONE to catch THE BIGGEST fish.

What do you think?

Any good walleye recipes out there?

Blessings!  Sue

  1. I think it is all about being THE ONE!! Although, I’m sure the prize money does make a small ‘dent’ in the expenses incurred – lol. I LOVE walleye and my fisherman does NOT fish for walleye (or perch – my next favorite). He is not a tournament fisherman either. However, he has been known to get out there by 3:00 a.m. to get ‘his spot’ for the kind of fishing he does!!!!!
