October ’12 Free Book!

We have a very special book for our October 2012 give-away – Ann H. Gabhart’s new novel, THE GIFTED!

The Gifted

Our give-away edition is a new trade paperback, but the best part is that it is signed by Ann and includes a bookmark as well.  From the back cover:

“Jessamine Brady has been in the Shaker Village for half her young life, but in spite of how she loves her sisters there, she struggles to conform to the strict rules. Instead she entertains dreams of the world outside. When Tristan Cooper seems to step out of those dreams to entice her into the forbidden realm beyond the Shaker Village, her life turns upside down.”

To qualify for the drawing (Thursday, October 25) to win Ann’s novel, just answer this question:

Do you have a tendency to follow the rules, or are you more of a maverick?

  1. I follow rules to a point, depends on the rules. I like to do my own thing, but never to harm or embarrass anyone. I am just me, different, but a loving, caring person.
I am enjoying all your books, Sue. Keep up the great work. I am looking forward to reading Ann’s book.

  2. I don’t know what happened, Karen, but I’ve put your comment back in place. I was away from home for 10 days and without Internet connections to my blog, so anything that got mixed up stayed mixed up. My sincere apologies! Meanwhile, your name is in the drawing, which is this Thursday (Oct. 25)!!

  3. I added my comment last week and now it’s gone. Where did it go? It was there when I looked days later.

  4. I would say I’m in between. I follow some rules but then I’m also a maverick sometimes.

  5. Love all the great comments and that so many of you are like me and believe it’s a good thing to follow most of the rules, at least the ones that keep order in the world. But maybe we all think like Brenda and that we’re sometimes rule breakers in our mind. And I don’t necessarily think keeping the rules makes us dull. I think it makes us sensible and wise. Mavericks have a much better time in stories and movies than they do in real life. As Sharon tells us, there are penalties to be paid when you break the rules that matter. But then again, we don’t want to be dull as ditch-water. That’s a great description of dull, Martha.

Maggie, I feel bad that you haven’t read one of my books too. 🙁 Maybe this will be your chance to give one a read if you’re the lucky winner.

Sharma, if we’re talking fashion rules, then I’ve always been a rule breaker. I wear what’s handy and comfortable. And forget the heels and make-up. That’s probably showing my age, but I’ve always sort of been that way.

I appreciate some of you who are faithful reading friends on FB coming over and leaving comments. I’m sure Sue does too, don’t you, Sue? It’s always fun when our questions on these kind of posts get a conversation going. Thanks to all of you for commenting and good luck in the drawing.

  6. Rules??? What rules??? If I could get away with it, I would. But I always got caught. I used to be a maverick, now not so much. There is one rule that my mother had when I was very young is to be home at a certain time. Well, I didn’t show up one evening. She called and called. Finally, I walked in the door and she asked where was I, she has been calling me. I said “I thought you were calling another Karen.” I was the only Karen in the whole neighborhood.

  7. Most of the time I follow the rules–but have been known to step outside the box and be just that little bit naughty—puts a little spice in a life that would otherwise be dull as ditch-water.

  8. I’m definitely one to follow the rules. Growing up, I was too scared of the consequences at home if I didn’t follow rules.

  9. I try hard to follow the rules, I figure they were set for a reason. I also believe it shows respect.

  10. I am also a very boring person. I always have followed rules to a T, since it upsets me to make any trouble for anyone. I guess I am a real wimp, the only time that I don’t follow rules is if it goes against my beliefs.

  11. I believe that I follow rules. As long as I understand them.
I would love to win Ann’s book and appreciate the giveaway!

  12. I try to follow rules. When reading a rule made I stop and think now why was that rule made and what purpose will it fulfill. What benefits if following this rule and what harm if I don’t. Doing this makes me understand the rule better. I enjoy reading books of different cultures. Would like to own this one….

  13. Blessings ,Dana

  14. My pleasure, Ann. I’m excited to give away your book. I loved reading about the Shaker culture and to better understand their ideas and lifestyle. This book is a treasure!

  15. My personality has been described to me as one who marches to the beat of a different drum, but I always have been a stickler to follow the rules. Of course it helps if I help write the rules to begin with!

  16. Well…I like to think that I follow the rules, but my parents would probably think differently. I suppose I’m learning to be independent. 🙂

  17. I follow the rules big time! I’m so scared of being in trouble. LOL I would love to have this book for my Ann Gabhart collection!

  18. I follow the rules. I never did like getting in trouble as a kid, so I usually obey. In my mind I am a rule breaker though!!

  19. Most of the time I follow the rules but as I have aged I have tended to ignore the ones that do not make sense.

  20. I guess for me it all depends on what the rules are but but I guess I should say I try and follow them:)

  21. Rules? i thought they were made for breaking. i guess it depends on what the rules are and what the consequences are for not following! So i do a bit of both. Thanks for the chance to win Ann’s novel.

  22. Depends – at work – definitely. Otherwise, depends on my mood. I can be a maverick. 😉

  23. I think I’m a maverick as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. Sometimes rules are made to be broken. I feel bad that I haven’t read any of your books, so this would give me a good chance to read one , if I win the book. 🙂

  24. I don’t “follow the crowd”. But I do follow rules, I suppose, depending what the subject matter is.

  25. I am a rule follower. My husband is the maverick, so we usually come out somewhere in the middle. 😉

  26. a bit of both…..His rules I follow…..a maverick as I won’t follow the wrong crowd. in this world you have to make many choices….make the right ones……
and anything written by Ann…I want in on!!!!!!!! vrush729@aol.com

  27. I was raised in a large family in the suburbs of Philadelphia. My parents kept a pretty close eye on us and guided us with the morals and ideals of the 1950’s. We learned that there are rules in life and that everything ran smoother if the rules were followed. So, I really have a strong tendency to follow the rules. I have, however, learned to color outside of the lines sometimes too.

  28. I am a rule follower but there are times I drift away and wonder what would have happened had I not been so committed to the rules and instead let myself stray in a different direction and take the chance and see where it takes me.

  29. I really have to say, I didn’t follow the rules. I was always the “one” to break them whenever I could……I can say I paid all penalties that were dealt to me and they have made me a better person. I am a maverick and very proud of it!!! I probably follow them more now as I am older, only because I found my own way……

  30. I follow the rules in some areas. But, I am my own person and do not follow things like fashion trends, and I’ve never done things just to be popular.

  31. I think I tend to try to follow rules. I would love to win this book. Thank you for a chance.

  32. Rules? Are there rules?? Just kidding. My husband says I’m a rule follower, but I think I break those “they said” rules all the time. For sure the Shakers had a lot of rules and if you broke even the smallest one, you were expected to confess your failing. In some of my Shaker books, I have my heroine break some of the sillier rules like which foot to step up on the stairs first on purpose. A little rebellion can be good for the spirit if it’s about rules that don’t matter. At the same time, some rules can make life easier. What in the world would happen if everybody decided they didn’t have to follow the rule of stopping at stop signs or red lights?

But in my writing, I break rules all the time, but mostly because I don’t always know the rules. I just like to tell the story the way in the best way I can. Thanks for doing a book giveaway with my book, Sue.

  33. Like you, Pat, I have more tendency to think about the rules now that I’m older than I did when I was younger. I think that’s a good thing. A democracy doesn’t stay a democracy if we all line up and follow along like sheep!

  34. I follow the rules. However, as I get older, if the rules are too difficult to complete, I contemplate if completing the rules are worth the effort. If the result obtained by following the rules is negligible then I just don’t start the process.
(Of course, I’m retired and the processes I’m considering are optional.) Life is too short to waste on nonessential tasks!)
