A Glance Back – Thanksgiving!
This Thanksgiving I felt especially blessed, because my mother is still with us, despite the ravages of white matter dementia, which has so afflicted her body and mind. Imagine not being able to use your hands, not being able to speak, not being able to walk, your muscles so stiff that even when you lie down, you cannot relax enough to set your head down on a pillow. That’s white matter dementia. But…Mom can still smile, and she usually does. Her eyes brighten when someone she knows comes into the room. She can still give a kiss. She can still hum along to music.
Mom lives in a assisted living home – Cedar Cove – and the care she receives there is wonderful. We gathered as a family to share Thanksgiving with her. Here’s a photo of our group just before we shared a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings:
Left to Right from the top of the photo: Me, my dad, my brother John, his friend Jody;
Front row: our daughter Krystal and my mom
I hope your Thanksgiving was filled with blessings!

Thank you for all these kind comments. I am so blessed and so grateful!!
Love the picture Sue and the up date. It’s all so hard but remember all the good memories….especially the smiles from your mother…..just take care of today….we are blessed to have our mothers so long……Happy Holidays!!!
Beautiful photo Sue. I never heard white matter dementia, having a wonderful family surrounding your mother must do her a lot of good!

We’re going down to Adrian to see my dad in a couple of weeks. He’s in a home down there. He’s physically well – other than diabetes – but last time I was down there he didn’t know who I was at first. Even knowing that was coming, it was still hard. I wish we lived closer so I could see him more often. Enjoy every moment with your mom!
Thank you for allowing us to be part of your family’s time together. I know that was wonderful for everyone. Merry Christmas now to all.
What a precious time together!
My mother died in 1983, my father in 2003 and I have no siblings… but there is always joy in gathering with our three children’s families.
We spent Thanksgiving in the Soo, and it was wonderful. Donna’s sister lives in town and our eldest daughter, Marily, lives with her. She has gone back to school after many years in the banking world.
Blessings to you
