October 2022 Free Books!
I’m excited to be giving away two wonderful books this month. Both are just out from local authors, and both are set primarily in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
IN THE ARMS OF GITCHE GUMEE by James P. Hill follows the life of Evangeline LeBlanc, a First American woman. The premise of the novel is what first drew me in. What if a U.S. presidential election came down to one vote cast by a new member of the House of Representatives? Isn’t that fantastic! And guess what? It COULD really happen. Hill’s research is based on personal experience, which includes working in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, and also as a university professor and political consultant.
From the cover flap: “Evangeline LeBlanc lived her young adult life in Christmas, Michigan, a tiny town perched on the southern shore of Lake Superior….Her life journey would be a turbulent one, but one which would eventually lead her to the nation’s capital, where she would play a pivotal role in the 2024 Presidential election.”
Charles M. McDowell’s book is a compendium of two novellas–MANDY and FAMILY SECRETS, and McDowell draws on his experience as an intelligence officer in the US Navy, a safety specialist for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and a safety manager with the Unternational Police Program in the Middle East.
From the cover of the book: “A simple question, how do men who served their country in war rehabilitate themselves? What does a young girl who was trafficked as a child do when her life…is threatened?” These novellas about wilderness survival against terrible odds will keep you reading.
Our give-away copy of IN THE ARMS OF GITCHE GUMEE is a new hardcover edition. MANDY/FAMILY SECRETS is a new trade paperback edition.
To have your name included in our Wednesday, October 26 drawing, just answer this question. Have you ever been in a situation so dire that you were worried about your own survival? A yes or no answer is fine, but feel free to tell us about it if you wish.
For my own answer, yes I have been. My husband (a pilot) and I were up in our plane when the engine threw a rod. We had 20 miles to the nearest airport and only by the grace of God and my husband’s skills as a pilot were we able to land safely. Needless to say, I was praying hard, but most of those prayers were for our children’s comfort if we didn’t survive.
No—thank goodness!
No.
I totally understand. Sometimes it’s best to keep past trauma out of our thoughts.
That must have been so frightening, Prudy, to know you had a baby involved, too.
I was in an automobile accident when I was pregnant for our first child.
Yes!!! Hard to talk about!!
Yes! Recently someone pitted our Jag and sent us into a triple spin into oncology my ng traffic! So very scary!

No. Thank you Lord!
Not that I can think of at this time.
Yes-During the Cuban Missile Crisis, Flying reconnaissance mission South of Cuba. We had a Tropical Storm we had to fly thru and we lost one of our Engines. We were blown off course ( I won’t blame it on the young Navigator), and when we broke out of the storm we looked out of the windows and saw the lights of Havana on both sides of the aircraft!!! We were indeed afraid that night. We made it safely back to the Naval Air Station at Key West but there were a few (33) dirty flight suits!!!
